Chickenpox - vaccination

The chickenpox (varicella) vaccine protects against varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox—and later in life can reactivate as shingles.

  • Who should get it?

    • Children: Routine vaccination

    • Teens & adults: Anyone who has never had chickenpox and wasn’t vaccinated

    • Especially important for people who live/work with pregnant women, infants, or immunocompromised people

    • Doses

    • 2 doses total

      • Children: 1st at 12–15 months, 2nd at 4–6 years

      • Teens/adults: 2 doses at least 4 weeks apart
